I understand the route these guys have taken as independent artists is a fucking rough road, and the way they commit themselves to touring incessantly would take its toll on even the Sony/BMG/EMI/Geffen etc supported bands who are travelling in contrasted luxury. They were offered all this and turned it down. And thank fucking christ.
In a world overshadowed by pretenious arseholes masquerading as "artists" and force feeding us largely bland, painted by numbers music, suddenly (for me anyway) there was two guys standing up in a crowd of brainwashed teenage girls, who were all wondering the same thing: "Where the fuck are Westlife?". Top of the Pops had never seen anything like it. I walked past the TV at home and stopped dead, totally transfixed by what i was seeing. Not only were they playing and singing live (a event that must have had the TOTP's producing crew not knowing what to do with themselves), but they were performing music that had integrity. The JCB song made thousands of people re-appreciate thier Dad's again, re-appreciate not being in school (for those who still are, unlucky), and reminice about a time when the A-team was like extended family. As life affirming as it is, JCB isn't even the best song on the album. For those of us smart enough to discover it, we couldn't even pick a favourite (ok, mine is Freedom).
Any band can get a website where thier fans come on and gush on about how great they are. But if anyone can tell me another band who are as completely and utterly unique as these two guys - and we are excluding Kraftwerk and Blue Man Group from this discussion - i would be thrilled to hear it. Musical brilliance that you can connect with, whether its emotionally or physically. They dont just play in front of you, they play beside you, for you. Thanks to Luke's sincerity and warmth you, for perhaps the first time in your life and for good reason, find it completely acceptable to start singing in front of complete strangers. You have become a legitimate part of the show. (Speaking of which, where's my cut?)
Every gig leaves you with overwhelming positivity and inspiredness-ness (Look it up.) that stays with you for weeks, making you clamour for more. Every person has thier own personal moment at a gig, i know ive had mine. They are Van Morrison, Tracy Chapman, Rahzel, Joni Mitchell, Dave Matthews, Jeff Buckley, Elliot Smith and the Wu Tang all at once but all themselves at the same time.
Im bringing bit by bit everyone i ever cared about to thier gigs. I want them to to see and feel what i get from Nizlopi, and as ive got quite a few people left to take, this latest news is really going to screw things up. Make this last tours turnout a statement to Luke and John from us to show them that we don't just want but need them back. Mediocrity needs a regular shot in the nuts.
Guys, take a year. Go crazy. You deserve it. But just a year, right?
Post a reply here if you have bought tickets, who you are bringing to what gig and what Niz brings to you.
Jamie Barr.
