Have to say I think they've absolutely nailed this album. It takes a bit of getting used to as I was so used to the live versions I've got, the first few listens through sound a bit over produced and not "natural" but after a few listens you get used to the production and they're just as good as the live versions After the first day's listen, England Uprise, Part Of Me, Drop Your Guard and Lay Down are probably my top ones on there, but it's so all so good. The version of Love Is is actually better than any of the live versions I've got. Will still be buying the "proper" version when it comes out, but just thought I'd post my thoughts on it now

fine story to tell Posts: 33 (04/01/08 14:20:39) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	No worries Sam, here's my take: Start Beginning: At first i preferred the live version, but after a few listens i love this too. Alot of subtle sounds going on, especially love what sounds like steel drums? A great spring/summer track. Im Alive Again: I enjoy this, but i have ruined it for myself by playing it constantly when it was a slightly different sounding live track. Solid. Find Me: Everyone loves this tune. Would be interesting to know what Ed Sheeran thinks of this album version. Feel Inside: This is one of my favourites. It has a sense of urgency about it that fits well with the song topic. Every now and again Luke just goes for it all out vocally, and this is a decent example. Last Night in Dakar: Sharp and melancholic, but as with all Niz songs not too much. They blend well with the guest contributors. Drop Your Guard: One i like, but dont love yet. I know ill get abuse, because people seem to adore it. The One: Another favourite. Loved it in its live form, but just adore the addition of the bit at the end, changes gear for a soul filled Van Morrison-esque finish. Part of Me: This one caught me off guard. Its an unusual song topic but almost impossible to dislike. Sung from the heart. Without You: When this changes gear to the more upbeat middle section it reminds me of Dave Matthews Band, but i dont know why. By the way, i was shocked to hear Luke and JP hadnt heard of DMB until a few short years ago. Beautiful. England Uprise: This one has got more than its fair share of flak from reviewers. They all seem to despise it. I can understand why its not everyones cup of tea. Firstly, its political which seems to set off a snootiness in journalists who claim to scoff at the way it apparently picks the most fashionable (relevant?) issues and skims over them. In my opinion its an uplifting song that attempts to get people off their asses. Nothing wrong with that. Love Is: Effortless classic. Another perfect bassline from JP, great vocals from Luke. A brilliant song that will stand alongside the best of Niz in years to come. Flooded Quarry: This has gone through several changes to be where it is. My least favourite was the slowed down version that bounced about for a while in limited form, while i thought the all out version from Live@Lowlands was the best. The album version is somewhere in the middle. Its good, but i dont think they've cracked it totally. IYCAI: An oldie but perfect for the theme of this album. Lay Down: Again, i dont know why but strangely reminicent of Dave Matthews. I like. Overall, a success. An uplifting album that like all thier output, puts me in a great mood. The truth of the matter is people dont know how to deal with Nizlopi. They are hard to pigeon hole, which bothers magazine reviewers no end. Ideally, for an easy life they would like to put them in the "One Hit Wonder" category, dust their hands and walk away. They arent an indie band, they're not manufactured and they're completely unpretentious. Where do they go? How many bands sound like Franz Ferdinand these days, or Arctic Monkeys? Good choice for first single, everyone I've played it to really like it! 8/10 I'm Alive Again - One of my favourite live tracks, can't help but smile when listening to the album version either. The album ending is amazing, great lyrics and awesome tune! 8/10 Find Me - Excellent song, one of the most instantly catchy ones on there. Again, one of my top live ones. 9/10 Feel Inside - This one really hit me at the Soho album launch gig. One that takes a few more listens to get into but definetly a grower that's worth taking the time to get into. 8/10 Last Night In Dakar - The first real "stop and listen" moments on the album, the Soho version was just incredible and it's been captured in exactly the same way on the album. 10/10. Drop Your Guard - A "carry on stopping and listening" moment. Loved it from the very first time I heard it, the music and lyrics go together so well, amazing song with so much feeling. 10/10. The One - Nice song, but after the last two doesn't quite have the WOW factor. Another nice simple one though, which is the style where I think the album has its best bits. 7/10. Part of You - So happy this made it onto the album, love the way the lyrics are changed so Luke doesn't mention the reason he "feels so down" until pretty near the end, makes a nice twist for anyone hearing the song for the first time. The extra instruments in the chorus work really well, up there with the best! 10/10. Without You - Nice return to the simplicity, honest lyrics that really hit you, the ability to go from slow-fast-slow again is amazing! 8/10 England Up Rise - The one that's splitting everyone's opinion! Have to say, I love it. My favourite off the album keeps swapping between this and Drop Your Guard. Nice unexpected guest appearance at the end as well! 10/10. Love Is - Classic. The "live" Nizlopi is captured so well on this. Simple with brilliant lyrics. 10/10. Flooded Quarry - I forget how much I like this until it comes on. If I've only got time to listen to a track or two it's never this one, but when it does come on on a listen through the full album I never know why! 9/10. If You Care About It - Slightly repetitive for my liking, I've never been a massive fan of this one but agree tht it fits in with the style of the album nicely. 6/10. Lay Down - Back to the perfect simple style to close the album, one of the ones that again really hits you straight away. 9/10. Overall, as I've said before, I think they've really nailed the album. Such a complete change from the sound of Half These Songs, but I think they've found their style (if you could even say they had a single style?!) and know how to use it brilliantly. How can it work going from Part Of Me to Without You to England Up Rise in 3 consecutive songs?! More different styles in 3 songs than most bands manage in an entire career! No other band could pull it off but Luke and John do it perfectly. Cannot wait to see the Birmingham gig in a few weeks and hear all the songs live again. My overall album score: 9/10 (may have been 10 if All My Life and Sorry had been on it in place of The One and If You Care About It ) Last Edited By: potter88 04/01/08 20:08:08. Edited 1 times.

If I had to make a top five it would probably be this: 1. Part Of Me 2. Feel Inside 3. Last Night In Dakar 4. If You Care About It (Not to sure about backing vocals at end "Killing your Mother, Killing your Father etc ) 5. Love Is (It justs sounds so good recorded) back to listening to part of me, "and my girlfriend by the way" "part of her is gay"

It had me bopping on my way into town the first day I got the album. A great song for a sunny day. I love the steel drums towards the end! 8/10 I'm Alive Again - Another great tune with a wonderful opening verse. It'll be a great one to sing along to at live shows. 8/10 Find Me - An extremely addictive and uplifting song. Not one of my stand out songs of the album but it does hit me every time I hear it! 7/10 Feel Inside - On another album this might be a knockout tune but among so many other great songs this one doesn't really stand out for me. It's still a cool song with lots of energy, I can imagine it'll lift the roof live. 6/10 Last Night In Dakar - At the moment this is my absolute favourite song on the album. Everything about it so amazing. The wind chimes at the start are so subtle you almost miss them, the percussion is just beautiful and the lyrics are touching. I can't see myself ever tiring of this one!10/10 Drop Your Guard - I think this comes in a close second to Last Night In Dakar. A really nice simple song. I can't wait to hear this one live because I can imagine it will sound amazing. I love the way it lifts towards the end! 10/10 The One - This is a really lovely song but doesn't stand out as much as some of the others. Still has some really nice lyrics and John's bass sounds great. 7/10 Part of Me - I had never heard this song before and now I'm totally hooked on it. I think it can be taken as tongue in cheek and totally in earnest at the same time. It sounds absolutely beautiful and the pace of the song is perfect!I love the violin in it, finishes off the song wonderfully! 10/10 Without You - A brilliant, simple and touching song, enough said! 8/10 England Up Rise - When I heard this song first I wasn't at all keen on it but after a few proper listens I'm a total convert. A really really great song. Jimmy Davis is brilliant at the end of it! 10/10 Love Is - When I first heard the live version of this song it totally blew me away, I was speechless. It's a beautiful song and I can't think of any songwriter who could write a song as touching as it. The album version doesn't quite hit me in the same way but it comes mighty damn close! 9/10 Flooded Quarry - This song sounds great! Not a total stand-out track on the album but still a rocking track! The horn section is awesome! 8/10 If You Care About It - Again not one of the knockout songs on the album but it's still great! I'd like it to be a little bit faster though. 7/10 Lay Down - I sometimes feel like this song kind of gets lost at the end of such a great and fast paced album, but that doesn't make it any less beautiful. It's beauty is in it's simplicity! 9/10 Overall: I LOVE this album! It contains everything I love about Nizlopi. I think it really captures their essence and shows them doing what they do best and funking rocking at it! It doesn't fit into any genre but that's part of it's appeal. I waited months for the release of the CD and on first listen I didn't really. But the more and more I listened I just couldn't stop! Start Beginning - Obviously one of the best off the CD. My personal favourite 10/10 I'm Alive Again - another good one. Whole song just keeps me on my toes 8/10 Find Me - good song, amazing lyrics 9/10 Feel Inside - second favourite after start beginning. So upbeat!! 10/10 Last Night In Dakar - Not a huge fan, but has a great nizlopi feel 7/10. Drop Your Guard - Another favourite. Liked the live version I heard on YouTube at ITunes. It has a great drum. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4G1taa2z2uU. 9/10. The One - Good, Has a great ending. 8/10. Part of Me - I love this one. Funny ending and has a great tune. It's a bit weird so I feel a bit funny listening to it and rocking my heard 8/10. Without You - Not a big fan, just to slow for me. I usually zone out on this one 6/10 England Up Rise - This song has gotten some bad reviews but I love it. His rap is pretty good and so upbeat. I'm not from England so maybe I don't get as offended as others 10/10. Love Is - Amazing, shows the real strength of Luke's voice. A bit repetitive, but other than that amazing 9/10. Flooded Quarry - Like others this took me a while to appreciate. but I'm loving it now 8/10. If You Care About It - a bit repetitive, but a good song. like the voice in the background 7/10. Lay Down - Not one of my favourites. Just to slow for me 6/10. It's a good CD, but didn't blow me away like Half These Songs Are About You. Doesn't have a lot of tracks that I love and am blown away my like the other. It's got its highs and its lows, but still has the great nizlopi feel to it 8/10

Nizlopi are the only music on my phone and i just keep them on constantly! My favourites on the album would have to be I'm Alive Again Find Me-this song grabbed my attention from the second i heard it Last Night In Dakar-such a beautiful song, i watch the podcast over and over and over... Drop Your Guard-reminds me of some of the songs from Half These Songs Are About You Love Is-saw it first on youtube ages ago and loved it Flooded Quarry the only songs that i still havnt gotten into are The One and Without You, they don't hit me the same as other Nizlopi songs but they're still good! Overall a fantabulous album

Call me old fashioned, but I found the excessive swearing off putting. I'm surprised that someone who sings about beauty and better world would swear so often in so many of the songs! Surely it is possible to be expressive and passionate without using language from the gutter.

It's almost like he's using it as an extension of language to express an extreme of pure emotion(as opposed to anger/hate etc targeted at one person etc). I do understand what you mean certainly, I'm sure other words could have been found to give a similar effect, but the effect wouldn't have been exactly the same, and maybe the version on the album is exactly how Luke felt it. Interesting topic. although I'm terrible at expressing myself on subjects like this, so please excuse the over-use of comma's...I think what I'm trying to say will pop more coherently into my head in a bit. I mean swearing doesn't often offend me anyway but I certainly don't see anywhere on this album where Luke seems to be swearing simply for the sake of swearing, as seems to be the case with alot of rab or hip hop music. I think he swears to emphasise a point that wouldn't quite have the same effect if the swear word were to be left out. Keep on truckin'
